101 things to do with a coconut tree…
I was sitting in the office the other day and got my head stuck on one of the soundtracks from Reservoir Dogs… Harry Nielson’s “Coconut” (put da lime in da coconut, you drank ‘em both up… put da lime in da coconut, you drank ‘em both up… doctor, is there nuthin’ i can take — excellent song).
Got me to thinking about all the things you can do with a coconut tree — particularly here in Bali.
So, without further ado.
Sing about it: Harry Nielson did it — you can sing along.
Drink it: Head over to Jimbaran Beach (Bali of course) and order yourself baby coconut (kelapa mudah) — turns out to be fresh coconut, served in the coconut shell (with a straw for the juice and a spoon for the coconut flesh). I’m not sure about the health benefits of young coconut — if you google it, you’ll probably find it’s a cure for cancer (what isn’t?) but it’s tasty. Watch the sun go down and the lights come on at the Four Seasons bungalows… nice thing about that particular set-up is that the Seasons looks pretty romantic while you’re sitting at the beach while they watch you hoist your third coconut.
Eat it: Either eating the flesh of the young coconut (see above) or grab yourself coconut cream to make a curry — many of the Indonesian curries are based on coconut cream.
Eat on it: Coconut Wood Tables are pretty common here in Bali (no, we don’t sell coconut wood tables but yes, if you ask us, we can find them for you).
Eat with it: check out our coconut ware utensils — chopsticks, spoons and all that.
Sit on it: Coconut wood chairs (same as above).
Listen to it: Coconut Shell & Bamboo Windchimes — one of our better selling products… for sure.
Wear it: Hmmn, might be more Hawaiin than Balinese or Indonesian but there are plenty of bags & hats around with bits of coconut fiber.
Live in it: Get a coconut wood house with alang-alang roof… no, really.
Exercise: Scoot up the tree and grab a coconut… something I’ve never done. More of an extreme sport than anything else.
Look into it… coconut shell mirror frames and stationery… many of these in the catalogue but in my house I’ve got two big coconut shell mirror frames (six feet high each), one dark shell, one almost white.
Decorate with it: Doesn’t matter if we’re talking about coconut wood flowers or coconut wood vases…
