Hibiscus Stump & Root Carvings from Bali
Hibiscus Tree Sprites are faces, figures and shapes cut and carved directly into Hibiscus roots. The carver has no plan before starting — each root is taken individually, the carvings follow the lines of the original wood.
Once the carving is finished, the stumps are given time to dry outdoors (all air or sun drying; no kiln-time for these wooden items). Finally, they’re sanded, polished and wax finished.
Hibiscus root (like Teak root & Suar root) is dense, strong and very durable.

And, if you like the sprites, you’ll probably also want to take another look at:
Abstract Carvings… suar and
pine wood
sculptures, natural
and ink
finishes.
Classic Bali Animal Carvings,
Buddha Carvings,
Traditional Balinese & Hindu Carvings…
our carvers trace their skills
back through generations.
Heart Wood Carving…
similar to Hibiscus Stumps
but generally smaller (less
expensive) pieces in a wider
variety of wood types.
Crocodile Wood Carvings…
intricate, highly detailed small carvings
in a pale, highly polished
wood — looks a lot like
bone or horn.
Parasite Wood Carvings… pine roots, buried in the soil where they’re
attacked by parasites and damp until they’re all twisted and distorted — dug
up and carved into impressive displays.
A large range of natural sea and amphibians
are probably my favorites in the series.
