Storyboards Update — New Models Added to our Magnolia Wood Storyboards… Handmade in Bali
Simply put: a storyboard is a wooden carving designed to hang on the wall like a painting.
You might call it a wooden relief or 3D Wood Wall hanging or plaque.
In its most traditional form, a story board captures a scene of every day Balinese life or one segment of a Balinese (Hindu) myth.
These scenes tend to be extremely complex and intricate although you’ll also find more simple images of birds in trees or Rama & Sita by themselves.
Unlike paintings, storyboards are really three dimensional (3D) as you can see from the examples at either side.
The first storyboards I saw were almost exclusively Balinese scenes but these days, you might find anything… from Naturalist depictions of animals and sealife to, more recently, reworkings of classical themes like Davinci’s The Last Supper and famous scenes and buildings in Europe.
If you have a particular scene you’d like to see as a storyboard, don’t be afraid to contact us — we’re happy to work samples.
Most of our story boards are hand carved from Kepelan Wood (although you will find some pieces in Suar and Jackfruit Wood) — it took me a while to track down the Western name (mainly because I was spelling kepelan wrong at the time) but it turns out to be Magnolia wood or Manglietia Glauca.

We found the storyboards a little more intricate and involved than many of our other wood carvings, so we’ve added an extra link to see more images of each piece — we hope you’ll enjoy the added detail.
