I’m probably way off base calling this line “rococo” but, like the French style of the 18th Century, it’s elegant, ornate and ornamental.
The category comprises wooden corbels (shown in the photo) which can be used decoratively on their own or mounted as pairs for shelving; medallions mounted on bases for display and mirror frames.
Wood types are a combination of Durian and Wani.

Another update that’s been a long while coming — Potted or Arranged Flowers.
In most instances, we already sell or can supply the component pieces for these displays but, for most clients, it’s just a little too like hardwork going through a container load of coconut wood flower heads, twisted stems, pandan and so on and putting it all in pots or glassware to make it look pretty.

All the new models are at the beginning of the category (FWA-50 through FWA-90).
And, as always, don’t forget our other related categories:

There was a time when wrought iron lanterns competed with suar and pine wood among Indonesia Export’s Best Selling Handicrafts…
…over the past 2-3 years, however, there has been a steady decline in interest — partly because of rising prices in materials but mainly (I would say) because everyone was bored with the old motifs, models and designs…
…long story short: what goes around, comes around — they’re back with a new mix of materials, colors and motifs — check them out:
Resin Lanterns & Shades
And, after you’ve looked through the new line, it may be worth your while to go back and look at the previous models:

A quick update for our Bird Cages — do I hear anyone saying, “About time!” ?
Some painted examples to spruce up the line:
Painted Bali Bird Cages
A few years ago, we made one of these cages big enough to comfortably fit two people inside and, no, I don’t know why they wanted a cage that big (I didn’t ask) but as far as Bird Cage makers in Bali are concerned, these cages are fine for real birds (very popular pet around here) but we would caution you that the bars are little too weak for anything more than a small bird — medium to large birds will probably tear open the rattan bars fairly quickly.
Long story short: we guarantee our products but cannot help if your expensive, tropical bird makes a break for freedom from one of our cages.
Recently, Bird Cages like these have been appearing retro-fitted as hanging lampshades or with wooden birds already inside (or both).
A very cute (and dare I say, saleable) re-interpretation of the old classic… something to think about.
Other Bird Related Categories on Indonesia Export include:
- Bamboo Bird Houses
- Bamboo Windchimes
- Birds
- Birds on the Branch
- East-West — Miscellaneous
- Parasite Wood Carvings
And, if you just search birds from the Indonesia Export navigation bar, you’ll find motifs, paint jobs and models in many more categories.
Enjoy,
Sean

A quick (but excellent) update to our incense holder product lines:
Ceramic Incense, Oil & Spice Dishes
[Note: If you’re already registered, please click here to logon before going any further. If not, registration, is quick, free, safe & easy — please click here to register now.]
We’ve always liked the dark green, organic (bananaleaf style) finish on Bali ceramics but the new styles (Buddha Head & Mask in particular) are very welcome addition.s
That said, as usual, please don’t forget the other incense and burner related categories:
Enjoy,

Reminder: We currently offer over 400 Different Models of Mirror Frames in Our Catalogue…
The Main Mirror Frame Category… warning: patience required.
318 models in this collection alone; it is a slog to get through the entire catalogue without losing your patience, energy, optimism or sense of humor.
Yet, it’s worth it. From the old-style sun & moon phase models, through finely carved Hindu & Buddhist motifs to simple, modern styles. It’s all here.
Recycled Teak Furniture… given the world’s current trend toward environmental concerns, this is absolutely a product line that bears close attention.
When we say, "recycled", we’re not kidding: our crafters visit certain islands in Indonesia where houses are typically made of wood and either buy the old houses or construct new houses (made of wood) and then swap for the old timber.
Bamboo Products…
a few examples of pretty,
woven bamboo covered
frames — circular and square styles.
Crazy Painted Carvings…
yes, either someone has
suffered a breakdown in a
paint factory or a serious
accident — fun stuff.
Painted Metal Sculptures…
pastel finished wrought and cut sheet iron; schools of fish, tropical plants and flowers… lovely stuff.
Wooden Art - Mirrors…
lightly carved pieces incorporating bright, primitive scenes painted directly onto the wood.
Bali Wood Mirror Frames…
focus more on natural wood finishes with motifs that incorporate local objects and patterns like bamboo and so on.
Natural Material Mirror Frames…
coffee root, banana leaf, pandan leaf, twists of bark and lamtoro — exotic, clever & eco-friendly.
East West Style Mirror Frames…
many nautical and country kitchen style mirror frames — a more cute, contemporary approach than pure "Asian".
Teak Furniture - Mirror Frames…
classic, antique-repro style mirrors built into cabinets or as dressing tables.

Bali does a lot of Albesia Wood Products — it’s a very useful type of wood: cheap, easily available; quite similar to balsa wood (which some will remember fondly as the main building material for model planes). You can find out more about the different woods we use by clicking here.
The models in this updated category are fairly standard for Bali — masks, owls and so on. That said, they’ve been brought up to date with some very rich paint finishes (acrylic only, no lead in the paint) and some gold trimming. Nice. See the whole range by clicking here:

Hibiscus Tree Sprites are faces, figures and shapes cut and carved directly into Hibiscus roots. The carver has no plan before starting — each root is taken individually, the carvings follow the lines of the original wood.
Once the carving is finished, the stumps are given time to dry outdoors (all air or sun drying; no kiln-time for these wooden items). Finally, they’re sanded, polished and wax finished.
Hibiscus root (like Teak root & Suar root) is dense, strong and very durable.
Click here to see the whole range:
Hibiscus Tree Sprites
And, if you like the sprites, you’ll probably also want to take another look at:
Abstract Carvings… suar and
pine wood
sculptures, natural
and ink
finishes.
Classic Bali Animal Carvings,
Buddha Carvings,
Traditional Balinese & Hindu Carvings…
our carvers trace their skills
back through generations.
Heart Wood Carving…
similar to Hibiscus Stumps
but generally smaller (less
expensive) pieces in a wider
variety of wood types.
Crocodile Wood Carvings…
intricate, highly detailed small carvings
in a pale, highly polished
wood — looks a lot like
bone or horn.
Parasite Wood Carvings… pine roots, buried in the soil where they’re
attacked by parasites and damp until they’re all twisted and distorted — dug
up and carved into impressive displays.
A large range of natural sea and amphibians
are probably my favorites in the series.

Here’s a line of strange, fun & eyecatching products: Bamboo Root.
A collection of grotesque masks, windchimes, small pots — even keyfobs — all made from the root of bamboo.
No rhyme or reason to these products, the carver pulls the root and let’s his imagination do the rest of the work.
End result: a pretty neat line of one-off products:

Just for the hell of it: my favourite piece is the Ketongan (BRT-012) you see in the picture at the left.
A Kentongan is basically a noisemaker – anything that makes a big enough noise when struck to draw the attention of other villagers.
Traditionally, the night patrollers would use simple kentongan to alert villagers to danger (fire, theft, etc.). Often this would be a very simple instrument such as a length of bamboo struck with a wooden stick or a hollow wood log with a hole in the middle.
These days, you’re more likely to find Kentongan used in temples (in the same way a Buddhist temple will use gongs), the striking of the kentongan will announce a ceremony and invite villagers to gather.
Enough about Kentongan, enjoy the category and please don’t forget the many other bamboo products currently on offer in the catalogue:

I’d always thought Lombok was a small island but after just looking up the basic details on Wikipedia, I find it’s only a little smaller than Bali in terms of area and population. You learn something new every day.
The island is well known for its distinctive style of pottery, tabletop items (bowls, coasters and the like) & wooden masks — you can see all the jewelry boxes at:

Ok, I was planning to go into a long, jokey preamble about new products (handmade of course) but, truthfully, I’m just delighted to announce a new addition to the family.
Athina & I shot this video yesterday (uploaded to GoogleVideo):
