Bali Handcarved Albesia Wood Fancy Products — Price Update

We have just updated our prices on the Bali Rococo product line…

…and as I come to type those words, I realise I screwed up when I named this line Bali Rococo…

…and how did I screw up, precisely?

A number of ways, really but here are the two glaring errors:

Firstly, rococo is an 18th century French style. Rococo rooms were designed as total works of art with elegant and ornate furniture, small sculptures, ornamental mirrors, and tapestry complementing architecture, reliefs, and wall paintings.

It’s the kind of flowery, ornate style I think of every time I watch the Three Musketeers (usually the Tom & Jerry version).

My mistake: not only does Rococo not really describe our product line but it’s French and historical… it has nothing to do with Bali. I would have been better off calling the line Handcarved Albesia Wood Decor or Handmade Ornate Carved Decor… something straightforward.

In fact, if you have any ideas, email us and if we use your name for the category, we’ll produce any two pieces you like at no charge to go in your next shipment.

Secondly, when I laid out the category, it ended up with the first page showing only the corbels and shelves… you’d think that’s all there was but if you keep flicking through the pages, you find not just more items but two other whole types of item:

It’s worth reminding everyone that many of the tiki products you see in Hawaii are actually made here in Bali — Bali’s a great source for all things Tiki and Hawaiian style as we have very similar flora and fauna, climate, surf scene and so on.

Carved Coconut Shells: Balinese craft from Indonesia Export

We’ve been admiring Carved Coconut Shells for years but never found a way to put them in our catalogue.

Here’s why:

They come from the Tampak Siring area — about half an hour from our usual production areas.

The people who make them aren’t exactly tech savvy and until pretty recently, you couldn’t reach them by phone, fax or pigeon.

Pricing is madly disorganised — ranging from US$5.00 to US$15.00 depending on the complexity of the carving / motif.

Sizing varies from around 12cm to 16cm … depends on the coconut!

They take ages to make — an order of 100 pieces could easily take 5 weeks.

They’re fragile — the bloody things are always rolling off tables and breaking or under your feet.

They’re out of fashion.

And we love them.

Suar Wood Jewelry Boxes – Wholesale from Indonesia Export

I usually call these ‘melty’ jewelry boxes and cabinets because, in the past, the shapes have tended to be abstract, aymmetrical and basically quite ‘melty’ looking.

Our latest carver for the line, however, has brought his own twist to the style with animal shapes and classic icons — we’re very happy with the results and we think you’ll like them also.

We have the category listed as Suar Jewelry Boxes but, of course, the boxes can be used for anything you like and we’ll be delighted to work with you to develop custom sizes, styles and functions.

These are made from suar wood (the same wood we use in our fine carvings) but can also be made from other woods like teak or mahogany if you prefer.
